One of the most compelling images for the church in the Bible is that of a body. The Apostle Paul likens the community of believers to a human body that is made up of various parts with differing roles all under the headship of Jesus. The main point of this analogy? That those who are part of the Christian faith are interconnected, that when one part is in need we all experience that need, when one member suffers all suffer, when one of us experiences joy we all enjoy the benefits of it (1 Corinthians 12:12-27)!
What does this have to do with us today? Lots! Since we are all connected through Christ it is necessary that we support, encourage and operate together. In contemporary terms it means we need to connect. We need to build friendships, pray with one another, encourage each other, help others out who are in need. This is what it means for the church (the community of believers - not the building or the service) to live as a body.
